Ever feel like, no matter what you do, you’re always struggling? You’re not alone. I can relate!

I remember graduating high-school with expectations of an exciting corporate-office career. I did what my parents told me to do…I enrolled into college the very next fall.
I attended my classes when my friends were in the pool hall, or sitting around telling jokes, even when I found the class boring.
In other words, I started out doing everything “right.” Sound familiar?

Somehow, years later, I found myself struggling to make ends meet, struggling to get along with my co-workers, struggling to please the boss, even struggling with the so-called “exciting” corporate-environment, with its “exciting” people, and “exciting” dress-code, and “exciting” after-hour-get-together’s. It was all a big struggle. This wasn’t my dream at all! 

Where was that “wrong turn?” Where did I go astray? Why was I struggling?
                        Turns out, my words were phrases like,
Girl, I’m so broke, I don’t know what to do!
And “Man, I am so tired all the time!
And “I am sick & tired of these people in this office!
And “These kids are getting on my nerves!
Notice anything similar about these phrases?
Turns out, my so-called problems were created by my negative state of mind. When I first made this discovery, after reading Neale Donald Walsch’s “Conversations with God: An Uncommon Dialogue,” I was so relieved! I’m thinking, “I CAN be cured of this negativity in my life!”
But then, the hard work started. I had to train my mind to think positive thoughts instead…Not easy, let me tell you!
But, if you want to live…I mean, really live a happy, healthy life, you’ll be motivated everyday, by every event, by every negative person who approaches you…to push forward, read more of that book that inspires…listen to more of that music that makes you sing…to do whatever it takes to break through!
And, again, in the treasured reward, you’re not alone…
There are others like me, like you, who have pushed forward, through all the negative hype, and learned to take control of their lives and make each day count!

What a Freed Soul Feels – (Part 5 of 5)

There was a time in my life when I could not simply do whatever I felt like doing. I couldn’t turn on the TV at anytime of night. I couldn’t open the refrigerator and pick something to eat whenever I felt like it…because, It wasn’t my refrigerator. (And I remember owning a refrigerator, but had very little in it.) I remember a time when I didn’t have a radio handy, or an mp3-player, or an iPad, or even a computer. There was a time when we had nothing. Hurricane Katrina blew through our hometown, and destroyed it all.

But, now, many years later, here we are…

It’s not a secret…It’s well-known and accepted, that “as a person thinks, so Is that person.”

Truth is, I’ve always believed in the Unseen. So even though I didn’t see the streaming device, I believed I would, one day, own one.

A “freed” soul is one Who Believes. No food, no music, no movie…will inspire you if you doubt your freedom. Dare to believe.

Use the power within. You are pure spirit!

This series is about freeing your spirit. When dark times come, know that it is temporary. Believe things will get better. The soul that is free feels joy, even when in pain. Soon, those savory smells of good food will remind you that you are blessed; , that song will make you nod or rock; that exciting movie will hold your attention …and will help you to smile, and to feel good once again!

I pray that you are One Who Believes in hope. And when adversity strikes close, continue to believe. And continue to hope, relax & rest your mind, using the tools we’ve outlined in this series about “freedom” … because whatever you’re escaping, these tools still have the ability to transport you to a better place!

An Escape to Anywhere (Hint: “Why We Love Hollywood”)

When I was a child, (let’s pretend it was in the 1950’s), in order to see a good movie, we had to go to the Movie Theater. I remember getting dressed and paying at the outside window for a ticket, and the smell of popcorn in the air!

Nowadays, it doesn’t take a lot to see a “good” movie. All I need is my phone! The technology for streaming entertainment allows me to watch a movie while I’m in line at the grocery store, or the mall, or waiting to see the doctor or dentist, or when commuting on public transit, almost anywhere, anytime I have a battery-charged device! How cool…the ability to escape no matter where I, physically, may be!

And just imagine what a BIG SCREEN will do to my mind…with surround sound…high definition color…and suddenly,

…while sitting in 90-degree weather in my living-room, I find ‘myself’ with a strong man, who is climbing a snow-covered mountain in Montana! Or, I love the feeling of skate-boarding on the snow & ice, with a couple who are half my age, and flying down the slopes!  But, for sure I’m also a fan of surfing the waves off the coast of sunny California, although … if I look outside my living-room window, it’s actually raining and very cold & windy.

This is the magic of video!

Movies have the ability to transport us from one place to another in seconds, depending on our “Internet speed!”

Remember, what you consider a “good movie,” may be the wrong choice for someone else.

But whatever your choice, enjoy what you love, get into it, and forget about your troubles for an hour or two!

No wonder, the term “movie” is searched for more than health or healing.

Last time I posted, I talked about the benefits of food as a great way to escape, when prepared, and when prepared-for, in a healthy way.

What can I say about man’s (& women’s) universal mental “soother!” For centuries, music has been a valuable tool to release those tensions that seem to just “come with living.”

Since ancient times, and especially now, music is an outlet for music-makers and music-listeners, alike! For music-makers, it’s therapy! For the listener, it’s more therapeutic than ever before! And easier to access than ever before.

Streaming on mobile devices and across the Internet is free and easy. No wonder it’s one of the most search-for terms on Google.

What Does Good Food Have to do with Mental Health?

In my last post, I delved into the mental-health benefits of escaping for stress-relief, and how something so simple as watching TV for awhile, will help relieve stress and tension in your life.

In this post, I’m going to dive into one of the best ways to relieve tension & help you ‘escape!’

The wonders of good FOOD!

It goes without saying that our bodies need good nutrition in order to feel good. But think beyond that…

[SCENE]

Imagine running errands for 2 or 3 hours after eating a “good” breakfast. But 4 hours later, I’m hungry. I’m thinking about my next stop, and it’s right next-door to a Hamburger joint that recently opened. I’d only eaten there once, but I can still remember that burger. Actually, I can almost ‘taste’ it! It’s not like the normal, everyday fast-food burgers. It was dressed with fresh tomatoes and lettuce and the best cheese! Okay, that’s it. I’ve made up my mind. Burger from ‘the new place!’ (Still, fast-food, but “good” fast-food, right?)

So, I complete my errands, then run into the new burger place, order, & decide to eat in the car, while listening to my favorite music.

Half-way through the meal, I realize, this wasn’t a good idea. In the first place, the burger doesn’t taste like I’d remembered. For another thing, more red meat wasn’t supposed to be on my menu for lunch in the first place! But, I finished the burger anyway, and drove home, over bumpy roads, through traffic, driving fast on the Interstate…Pull into the driveway, park and realize, I have indigestion.

 [NEW SCENE]

Now, Imagine on a Saturday afternoon, changing from house-slippers into shoes, anticipating lunch, because I’m meeting a friend at one of our favorite restaurants. I’ll spend about $5 or $10 more because it’s a “nice” restaurant. But I already have an idea of what I’m going to order, because I’ve eaten there once before.

You can probably, already guess that after that meal, I’m going to feel a lot better than if I’d eaten a hurried fast-food meal.

Thing is…

Food has the power to transform your day ~ for more than one reason!

  1. Nutritious food is better for you, so it makes you feel better. (Duh!)
  2. The social interaction that occurs when you’re eating something that tastes really good, something you’re enjoying, will just simply, make you feel better. You may even, be eating alone, but you will want to tell somebody!
  3. Good food causes us to think of those we love, for some reason. It reminds us that we are blessed, even if our current circumstances aren’t what we’d like.

And The endorphins released in our brains, when we feel good and when are enjoying the moment, bring that feeling we all want and need.

Lesson? Be good to your mouth! Eat well. Avoid over-eating, because that will only make you feel bloated.
